My Final Blog for Mr SA - March 2010

Well, this is it. After eight months from the day I entered the pageant, and with the Mr. South Africa 2010 crowning event now just days away, the butterflies are back in a big way! It has been argued by those closest to me that I might have been a little overambitious as far as commitments go and reflecting honestly, I have to admit that juggling family life with work, studies, my charitable involvements - and keeping my blog regularly updated (!) - would prove impossible, were it not for the loving support of my friends, my family, and especially my beautiful wife (I got married 20 February ).

Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to showcase my ambassadorial work to date, and to highlight especially my plans for the future, as the changed man I am today as a result of the positive challenges and opportunities presented to me by the Mr. South Africa Board of Associates.

As can be seen from my former blog entries, I have had extensive involvement with Ons Huis, Angels Walking for Breast Cancer, the Return To Roots Foundation opposing violence against women and children, as well as other endeavors in association with Chef Tinus Pretorius of Ramkietjie to raise funds for people with various medical crises.

One person who really stood out for me as a remarkable individual with a heart of gold is Arlene Zlotnick, my great friend and role model who is at the head of the Houghton branch of CHOC, the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa.

It was through another of my great pillars of strength, Tarryne Rautenbach that I met this amazing lady, who welcomed me with open arms to become an Ambassador to the foundation. Together, we have achieved much for the children, and have even greater plans in the pipeline, so watch this space!

To give my readers some background on what it is that we at the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation stand for: the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation is a country wide voluntary organization. It brings together the parents of children who suffer from all varieties of cancer or life – threatening blood disorders.

The name of the organization “CHOC”, an acronym for Childrens Haematology Oncology Clinics, was used by the first local parent group established in 1979. CHOC is not funded by government, but rather by the donations received from corporate, individuals and parents of children with cancer. Funds raised are applied to benefit directly the children and their families, and also those involved in the treatment of these serious illnesses.

In 2000, a new national organization was formed, linking parent groups in all parts of the country. The goal of this dedicated group is to improve the welfare and quality of care of children with cancer. There are regional offices of CHOC based in Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal.

From 11 -12 February 2010, I had the pleasure of being a judge at the Mr and Miss Edenvale High School pageant. There were over 100 entries in the junior and senior rounds, and I must say that of the pageants I have judged at thus far, this was by far the most enjoyable.

Being a finalist in the Mr. South Africa 2010 pageant myself, I always find it interesting being on the other side of the judging process, as the criteria are almost always the same as those on which I myself am being judged: overall appearance, personality and general composure. Thus, I always make a concerted effort to put the contestants at ease beforehand, and to judge fairly to the best of my ability.

On being asked to become involved in this particular school pageant, I met again with Arlene to discuss with her some ideas for future fundraisers. We decided it would be a good idea to sell blue CHOC armbands and hippo key rings at the pageant. With the help of my wife and niece, we managed to raise R1 900 over the two nights.

I was also grateful to have the opportunity to take the stage briefly on each of the two evenings and raise awareness amongst the parents and children as to the great work being done by the CHOC team in providing outstanding care to children suffering from Cancer or life threatening blood disorders, as well as counseling services to their families.

On 2 March I visited King David High School, where charitable work plays an integral part in the pupils’ scholastic activities. By prior arrangement with the school’s headmaster, we set up a stand there during Lunch break, sold armbands and keyrings again, and also color hairsprays to pupils and staff members. The initiative was a huge success, as we raised an astonishing R4 000 in just 45 minutes. If so much can be achieved in so little time at one school, there is surely hope for our nation in terms of what we can achieve with even the smallest individual contributions to the wellbeing of others.

Saturday 6 March was to be a busy day indeed. I made my way to Cresta Shopping Centre, where I color – sprayed and shaved some heads and signed autographs at the annual CANSA Shavathon. With me were Neil Pauw and Glen Hodgson, members of the renowned local band, The Parlotones. It was wonderful to hear that in the first four hours, almost R26 000 had already been raised. I left the event with blue stars sprayainted on the back of my head, and would be quite proud to see some of my fellow finalists also donning their own funky hair designs later that evening, at the Ons Huis Fashion Extravaganza, which was held in Pretoria. Not to jump the gun, before I drove through to this final event for the day, I hastily made my way across to the Lifestyle Garden Centre, Randpark Ridge, where myself and a few of the other ‘CHOC-kies’ participated in an annual fundraiser where members of the CHOC team sell gardening portfolios to the public, with all proceeds being donated to the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation. I unfortunately also didn’t have much time on my side, but managed to raise R640.

As far as fundraising goes, I shall keep all posted regarding future fundraisers we have in the pipeline. Arlene and I are already in talks regarding a large – scale fundraiser to be held at Huddle Park, between Senderwood and Sandringham, just after the World Cup celebrations.

My wife and I will manage the event in collaboration with CHOC’s Management team. In a recent meeting with Arlene, we decided on a cross-country fun run and family day to raise funds and awareness for CHOC, with said funding going into the upgrading of Johannesburg General Hospital’s Oncology Unit. We will have the CHOC children involved in all the festivities and, in accordance with the ideal of including parents in the childrens’ support process, we will have them participate together in items like bean bag races, egg and spoon races, piggyback races and the like.

We have also discussed bringing in large corporates like Jeremy Kussner Productions, who we will approach for fun rides and jumping castles, and Red Bull for refreshments. Additionally, we would like to foster a spirit of community by bringing in, for example, the SA Police force with a dog show, and the South African Army, who have shown major interest in former protests against economic and residential development on this natural greenland in recent years.

With the event having been marketed in the various Media, including radio and local newspapers such as the North Eastern Tribune, we would like to have registrations open on the official website (www.choc.org.za) at least two months prior, to ensure that all needed capital is secured in advance for items like food and drink. Exciting times ahead…!

For those of my supporters who are following my blog regularly, I would like to say a big “Thank you” for all of your support. If I am to be crowned as the next Mr. South Africa, I make it my solemn pledge to give my all in “living the brand” , and to follow through on my every promise. I would be truly proud and honored to be your ambassador in the exciting year of our World Cup.

On Sunday 6 December 2009 I participated in the Rotary International and GPAPD ‘Challenge the Challenged’ Wheelchair race held at Greenstone Shopping Centre. Myself and various sports- and other celebrities had our feet strapped to wheelchairs, and, in a lighthearted race against people without the full use of their limbs, were given a taste of what a challenging lifestyle they actually lead.

Two teams were formed, and one contestant from each took off at a time to see who could complete assigned tasks throughout the mall in the shortest possible time. These included relying on the courtesy of passers – by while attempting an ATM transaction, grabbing a flyer from a countertop in one of the stores, going into the cloakrooms to wait for the only disabled cubicle to become available for use, and finally, asking shoppers to assist us in reaching for foodstuffs packed on the highest racks in one of the chain stores, leaving them with the cashiers before making for the finish line… Phew!

As a really grand finale, each able – bodied participant was called up to hand over a wheelchair, sponsored by Wimpy and Green Office, to a disabled person in need. What makes this really remarkable is that wheelchairs are not inexpensive, and the recipients were all from disadvantaged backgrounds, making a happy festive season a reality for them.

My heartfelt thanks go out to Roxanne Broughton from Green Office for inviting me to attend this fantastic event, and it is with a sincere heart that I commend her for making a notable contribution to the protection of our environment and the many endangered species therein. I really look forward to working with her in the new year.

Masquerade Ball Fundraiser – 23 November 2009 at Indaba Hotel, Fourways

On the evening of 23 November 2009 I had the honour of being invited by my esteemed colleague, Addi Lang, founder of Return to Roots Foundation and Caitlyn’s Castings to be Master of Ceremonies at the Masquerade Ball Fundraiser held at the Indaba Hotel, Fourways in support of the 16 days of activism campaign – No Violence to Women, Children and Animals, and supporting Hugh’s Haven and SA Guidedogs Association for the blind. Numerous items were auctioned off at this prestigious event ( including a pair of diamond earrings sponsored by Arthur Kaplan Jewellers, and valued at R30 000!) and all proceeds were donated to these worthy charitable organizations.

Co-founder, Aubrey Pieterse made me truly proud to stand amongst like – minded, real men, who care enough to rise to action in being a voice and guardian angel to women and children suffering under domestic violence and other forms of abuse.

Despite the fact that we currently find ourselves hard – hit by an economic recession, the generosity shown by the public was overwhelming. It brings great warmth to my heart to see that there are still people out there who would acknowledge the fact that we all still need to share a little of our love and money for the greater good of mankind.

Angels Walking for Breast Cancer (Sunday 1 November)

Thanks to my close friendship with Addi Lang of Return To Roots Foundation, I have met numerous other wonderful people along my fantastic journey, one of these being Mandy Rhodes of Maraschino Marketing.

Apart from running her own highly successful marketing company for numerous high – profile clients, Mandy is the creative brain behind every fantastic event planned for the Return To Roots Foundation, including the recent Masquerade Ball Fundraiser which was held at the Indaba Hotel, Fourways.

On Sunday 1 November, myself and Kaylen Hamel, best known as Miss Teen Globe 2002, Queen of the Universe 2007, and current contestant of Survivor – Model had the honor of being Master – and Mistress of Ceremonies at the Angels Walking For Breast Cancer – event held at the Kyalami Race Track, and organized by none other than Maraschino Marketing.

For this noble fundraiser televised by e- T.V. Prime Time, roughly 8000 people walked the full 5 kms of the race track, dressed in Angelic attire. During my one – on – one interview with e, I was asked whether I felt that there was in fact enough awareness among men regarding this illness – my response was simply that the amazing turnout by the thousands of men present that day must surely have testified to the fact that the guys are indeed doing their part in offering their valuable support and contributing to this important awareness campaign in walking tall against breast cancer. I was truly proud to have had the opportunity to walk with them.

Return to Roots Foundation Press Conference – ‘Dead Men Walking’ (20 October)

On Tuesday 20 October I attended the ‘Dead Men Walking’ - Press Conference hosted by Return To Roots Foundation, which was held at new-age lifestyle centre, Zenatude in Rivonia. Here I met a truly inspirational man who, despite being affected by terminal illness Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, and with a life – expectancy of two-and-a-half to five years, has decided to dedicate what time he has left to embark on a walk across nine provinces to raise awareness of what it means to be a man in South Africa.

Essentially, he will be promoting the changing of minds and attitudes and creating awareness regarding the moral decline in our society that permits violence on our women and children- and the eradication of entire wildlife species to persist.

When asked how long he will be walking, Douglas says the answer is easy – “For the rest of my life”. Perhaps Johnny Walker would prove the most apt of sponsors to the work of this exemplary man?

Announcement of Finalists – 16 – 18 October at FTv Silverstar Casino

On 16 October myself and the 11 other Mr. South Africa 2010 Finalists from around the country came together for the official public announcement held at FTv Silverstar Casino.

On my arrival at the Black Eagle Guest Lodge in Roodepoort, where we were to spend much of the weekend, I was burning with curiosity as to who the other 11 guys would be, and I have to say that meeting them was a fantastic and memorable experience, and what made things really interesting was that every individual seemed to carry a distinctive “personal brand”, so to speak.

Despite the competitive edginess one would surely expect from a group of contestants in a pageant of this nature, the twelve of us got along famously in almost no time at all.

For those who know me intimately, it goes without saying that as a professional actor, I generally cope rather well with audiences. Strangely enough, however, this particular event, which required a personal introduction to the public left me so nervous that what had initially been planned as the perfect speech would eventually turn out to be an edited version of the original, bearing no resemblance whatsoever to my notes!

All in all, this weekend away was a truly unforgettable one for me, and I feel honoured to have come this far as one of the twelve - a landmark moment in my book of memories.

How do I feel about the past 8 weeks?

I never intended to enter Mr. SA at all in fact. My fiancé suggested that I enter and give it a go, as I had absolutely nothing to loose, and everything to gain… and then I became one of the semi finalists!

No doubt, I had stresses along the way, and there were setbacks that got me downhearted at times. At that point, I took time to reflect that nothing will get me down or shift my focus. There were tasks at hand and challenges that I had to endure and overcome.

I feel really positive in knowing that I have grown tremendously on a personal level and spiritually. Where I was two months ago, and where I am now, are two different places completely. Just looking at my activity schedule I still can’t believe how many things I got involved with and achieved!!

After two months of work as Mr. SA Semi-Finalist, by far the most rewarding aspect of this whole process for me has been a genuine leap of self-discovery; of taking the opportunity to give more of myself and become more in tune with who I am, and what is that I stand for. Its is through this journey that I have become involved with Addi Lang and the Return 2 Roots Africa Foundation. I will be working towards raising greater awareness of the importance of protecting and empowering our women and children. Herein lie the true rewards of these eight memorable weeks.

I am proud of my achievements to date and the rest is up to fate. Gracefully, I will accept what ever the outcome may be. Through this positive experience, the journey has been priceless and awesome! May the best man be chosen for the job.

30 September: Miss Schools SA - Final dress rehearsal and pre-judging

Today was exciting!! I was involved with the final dress rehearsal and pre-judging of Miss Schools SA at Silver Star Casino. Today’s workshop involved motivating these young ladies and spoke to them about what it takes to be up on that stage. Its not all about how physically beautiful you are, or how lucky you are to have good genes. There is far more to it that meets the eye. Its how ones speaks, how they present themselves, what image they project etc. The judges look beyond the obvious.... they look for personality that shines from deep down in your core and that radiates a genuine smile.

Tomorrow is the big night!! The final to see who will be the next Miss Schools SA. I will be co-judging the event at Silver Star Casino!

28 September: Miss Schools SA

After my early morning event on Glenhove, I attended the first day of “Miss Schools SA”. This workshop was held in Roodepoort in conjunction Return 2 Roots Africa of which I am their official ambassador. Girls from the age of 5 to 15 years are participating from various regions. Today I spoke to these young goddesses about my involvement with Return2Roots Africa, and that I would not just be there as a judge, but as their guiding mentor too. I advised that a pageant is more than just about beauty - they will be judged on personality, general presentation etc. By sharing my own personal experiences with them, I will be guiding them through the entire process, assisting on presentation skills and how radiate their confidence (which so many people lack in general)… all in preparation for their big stage night on Thursday, 1 October at Silver Star Casino. If you are confident in yourself … you will pull off anything!
As part of this pageant, these young ladies will also be raising funds for Return2Roots Africa, a non-profit organization, in support of woman and child abuse.

Monday 28 September: In my “Goldies” on Glenhove and Oxford – raised R304.28 for Ons Huis Trust !!

What a way to start my Monday!!!! Glenhove and Oxford intersection in Rosebank. At 07h00 there I was, inked in red lipstick all over my chest and back, flaunting a smile and showing off my “goldies” whilst running up and down the lanes in traffic raising money for “Ons Huis Trust”. In good humor, motorists did not hesitate to assist my worthy cause and campaign! One motorist said I looked cold and said I must please take his donation and go buy a jersey LOL. I stood there alongside the newspaper guy…ha ha think it was the best bling attraction he had seen on his corner in a while I did it!! Raised R304.28 to be exact! You will be surprised how much small change people keep in their consoles. Today, those useless copper pieces came in handy! My tin felt like it weighed a kilo! Thank you to all those motorists that supported me today… even if it was just smile that you had to offer. Nothing nicer than starting your day with a smile and a run of course… in gold running gear!

ITS SHOW TIME FOLKS……ROCKY RETURNS FOR THE TIME WARP IN SANDTON – STREET STYLING!

No one said life would easy, or that plans are always guaranteed to fall into place. There will always be disappointment in some form or another and i look at this as a change of plan.
After blood, sweat and tears my event “Afternoon with Clayton and the Stars” unfortunately did not work out as planned at the eleventh hour. Nevertheless, in my final attempt to raise funds for the preferred charity of Mr South Africa, ‘Ons Huis Trust’ I will be ‘begging for money’ in peak-hour traffic at busy intersections for the last few days available before this section of the pageant ends. Time for neighborhood watch in style……In the city of bling, it’s all about appearances right??? Who votes that I get into character of Rocky, and wear my “Goldies’ (gold shorts)” that I wore in the “Rocky Horror Show” staged at the Victory Theatre?????

I hope that you see me on the corner of William Nicol as well as Rivonia roads in the mornings and corners of Glenhove and Oxford in the late afternoons. I will do whatever it takes to raise the necessary funds for this charity as part of being a Mr SA Semi Finalist!

Hi Bloggers! Im starting to get hang of this blogging thing. At first, I thought it was really complicated but seemingly its quite easy. As the days go on, more and more things fall into place, just as they should be!
I was privileged to have been invited by well-known international singer Patrizio Buanne as a special guest at his private birthday celebration that was held this past Sunday, 20 September 2009 at un upmarket guest house in Fourways. It was spectacular, fine cuinsine attended by approx 50 VIP guests ! Top Billing were invited to cover the occassion and will be screened on TV this Thursday, 24 Sepetember 2009. Had a great surprise bumping into actor Harold Richter, my colleague that i starred alongside in local soap 'Villa Rosa' on SABC. What a great afternoon!!

Miss Schools - Walk The Walk

Next event is Miss Schools - I will be training the girls on “walking-the-walk” and doing a presentation with ‘Return 2 Roots Africa Foundation’, my charity of choice, opposing woman and child abuse and violence, at the NG Church hall in Roodekrans. Wednesday, 28 September I will be at the final dress rehearsal and pre-judging. The main Gala event takes place at Silverstar Casino on Thursday, 1 October.
The diversity of events that i am involved with for this pageant for Mr SA as Semi-Finalist has been awesome so far... what a journey and thank you for following my blog!!

Live interview with RADIO TODAY - 14 September

This week has been busy! Two radio interviews in one week... not bad huh?? Radio DJ, Charl Pretorius of ‘Radio Today’ interviewed Tinus and I in regard to our big event coming up this Friday, ‘Afternoon with Clayton and the Stars’. It's going to a glam event so make sure you get your tickets for only R250!! Information on the event is posted below……shhhew feel like a major celebrity…lights....camera.....action!! Gareth Pickett Fundraiser - R43 400 raised !!!!!!!

Today, 13 September 2009, I hosted another charity auction with Tinus Pretorius at Ramkietjie in aid of Gareth Pickett who is in desperate need of both hip replacements (refer to my blog below for details). Todays event was awesome….we raised R43 400!!!!!

Gareth’s day was awesome!! Firstly, let me shed some light on this young man, Gareth… what a humble lad! Not once, did he make out to be a victim. Rock band ‘Full Frontal’ opened the days event with their rocking vibe. As sore and uncomfortable as Gareth was, he got up and danced like no one was watching. Katherine the belly-dancing-goddess, awed the guests with her hips flicks and rhythmic flow of eastern dancing – truly beautiful. A massive bottle of Ballentines whisky was auctioned off amongst other bottles of wine, and various artworks. A City Lodge-weekend-get-away was also up for grabs for 2 people, including bed and breakfast. One of my friends, Gareth Worth who also played in the ‘Rocky Horror Show’ at the Victory Theatre last year, discussed Gareth’s condition in depth as to give more insight as to what Perthes Disease is all about. Your prayers, wishes and donations are needed for both Gareth and Vicky. Please support them as they endure this journey seeking recovery. Again, let us be thankful that we are healthy. Its not pleasant seeing people in such desperate need and the solution lies in our hands to help. Every contribution helps, no matter how big or how small.

Gareth and his family were so grateful for what the funds and that this day happened because he is in need of financial assistance for his operation. I can only imagine what he must have felt like seeing all these people arrive in his honor...members of the community, friends and family. I know I was awed and I was just the medium to help facilitate the day. I am honored to be accompanying Gareth to hospital on 6 October for this major procedure. Should Gareth not be able to have this operation, this will result in the traumatic amputation of both his legs.

Thank you to Tinus over and over again for having a heart of gold and always going the extra mile!

Vicky Parker Fundraising Auction @ Ramkietjie

Saturday afternoon was the charity auction for young lady, Vicky Parker suffering from Lyme disease held at Ramkietjie in Ruimsig. Vicky is in desperate need of treatment in Germany. We raised R10 000 for Vicky 2 weeks ago.Awaiting the final figures from the auctioneer to advise how much money was raised this weekend. Thanks again to Tinus Pretorius for putting this event together ! Photos to follow shortly!!

Cresta Centre Shopper Competition - Invited Guest

Wow another amazing weekend!!

On Saturday I was invited by Cresta Centre as special guest in the prize giving of their shopper competition. In total, 33 winners were chosen: 3 people won R33 000 and 30 others won R3 000 each. The tensions were running high and everyone eager to see what was in their envelope as they ripped it open.

One of the winners has been shopping at the centre ever since it opened which is 33 years ago! Hmmmmpf think I also should have put my till slip in the box….. The champagne definitely came in handy afterwards as the winners were shaking… I was even anxious for them! Thank you to Cresta Centre for the opportunity to be part of this event!!

Radio and TV Coverage "Dinner with Clayton and the Stars" on 18 September @ Ramkietjie

As you know from reading my blog, I will be hosting 'Afternoon with Clayton and the Stars' with Executive Chef, Tinus Pretorius of Ramkietjie, rescheduled for Heritage Day, 24 September, in aid of 'Ons Huis Trust' charity. This is going to an amazing event! Celebrity guests and a night full of entertainment!!!

Tinus and i will be interviewed on Friday 11 September on AM 'Radio Today' in studio at 10h00. I will be discussing the event as well as the Mr. South Africa Semi-Finalist campaign, explaining what I am up to and what we have planned for the evening of 18 September.

Feedback: CHOC (Childhood Haematology Oncology Clinic) 30th Anniversary Celebration - 8 September

Last night I attended the CHOC (Childhood Haematology Oncology Clinic) 30th Anniversary Celebration as invited guest and Master of Ceremonies. The event has held at Coco Bongo at Monte Casino and was well attended by supporters of these children and families.

Celebrity guests Joost van der Westhuizen, Amore Vittone and Brigette (finalist of SA Survivor), also attended in aid of this celebration. Sadie Cutland, founding member of CHOC was honored for this foundation that she started 30 years ago and how it had grown to be such a successfull NGO. Again, I was even more humbled by the lengths that volunteers go to support this foundation. Last night I got the whole picture of what CHOC is, what they do and what they are involved with. When charities go around asking for your support, it is because they desperately need it, and rely on your donations as well as corporates to keep this foundation going.

CHOC is continually raising funds in support of families and children that are undergoing treatment. So many people give of their time to these precious young children to make them feel loved, supported and show that they are never alone during their illness. CHOC uses every possible avenue to raise funds and last year they formed the fundraising CHOC Cows to increase the Moooooola. Six men found a creative way to raise money by deciding to cycle the Highveld Stereo 94.7 Cycle Challenge, wearing head-to-toe cow suites, with the aim of raising R10 00 per cow which would bring in R60 000. With no plan in place, but asking for support from the community, they exceed their expectation by raising R230 000! This year they are taking this CHOC Cow Fundraising Team even further, by pulling out all the stops to raise R1 000 000 in aid of building a CHOC house at Baragwanath Hospital. The creativity that these guys go to is unbelievable and they wont stop Mooooing until they reach their target!

As my charity of choice is Roots 2 Africa Foundation, I will definitely be doing my bit to assist with this foundation. Children are very close to my heart and I will accommodate CHOC wherever possible.

Thank you to Arlene Zlotnick, Fundraising Manager of Johannesburg, for the opportunity last night to be part of this celebration and to WANT to get more involved from the bottom of my heart!

My message to you, reader of this blog, please take time to give back to those less fortunate than ourselves. Yes, we all have stressful lives, work, pay the bills blah blah….but we do tend to forget about those in need, because we always put our own needs first. We need to find balance in our lives and give wholeheartedly. If you do not know what CHOC is about, I urge you to please take a minute to visit their website. Fundraising event at Cantare @ Monte Casino

You have to love spontaneous moments in life… I attended a function at Monte Casino two weeks ago. Cantare hosted a fundraising ladies night with male entertainers and were auctioning off one of the entertainer’s diamante collars. The MC of Monte Casino took over the show and decided to make the auction more interesting by giving this collar a higher purpose - I had to wear it! Clearly this was an impromptu moment that got me totally of guard, and I still managed to raise R1500 from this auction. The highest bidder had my undivided attention for 1 hour entertaining her and her friends over some red wine.

Women and child abuse are two issues that I feel very strongly about. One rape, is a rape two many and we desperately need a value system in society. Men must learn that NO means NO!!!!

As Official Ambassador and Spokesman for Return 2 Roots Africa Foundation, I will be kicking off the '16 Days of Activism Campaign' with an exclusive radio interview on 702 Talk Radio. This period runs from 25 November to 10 December. Founding member, Addi Lang started this foundation as protection of woman and children. The foundations main objective is to promote rape prevention and raise funding for the education programs that includes rape prevention wokshops, hijack prevention as well as teambuilding in rural and peri-urban areas.

Return 2 Roots Africa were amongst the 10 international winners of 'Woman’s Safety Awards 2004' and have been honored during II International Seminar of Safer Cities for Women and Girls held in Bogot, Columbia during November 2004.
Some exciting events are in the pipeline which i will be sharing with you as soon as they have been confirmed. However, i am looking forward Angels Walking for Breast Cancer on 1 November and the Masquerade Ball as Master of Ceremonies on 23 November 2009.

Lust-Decadent-Dining… Cooking with Clayton: a loaf of bread, a chicken, and Avocado Magazine 4 September

So meanwhile….. there I am, with my dishcloth, having an exclusive photo shoot with Avocado Magazine in my sister-in-laws kitchen. Thanks to Sasha Zambetti, Editor of Avocado who assisted me in making my favorite two indulgent dishes, ‘Creamy Paprika Pene Chicken’ (oooh I just love this dish) and my mother's legendary, ‘Bread Pudding’, a real sweet family treat to end off any meal.

By no means was I the ‘Naked Chef’ or Jamie Oliver, but I know even they would have been impressed. I couldn’t help grinning as I watched Sasha and her crew devour both dishes! (must have been good!). Next time I should invite master Chefs, Tinus Pretorius and Nigella for a cook-off… what do you think???

Chicken Pasta

A family favourite in the Heroldt household

Serves: 4 - 6

Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

350g penne pasta

8 - 10 chicken drumsticks

20g butter

15ml paprika

250ml chicken stock

100ml chopped parsley

250ml cream

1 green pepper, deseeded and sliced into strips

Method:

1. Boil the pasta in salted water according to packet instructions.

2. Wash and dry the chicken drumsticks, then fry them in an electric frying pan in a little butter until all sides are crispy and golden brown.

3. Sprinkle over the paprika and cook with the chicken for a few seconds before adding the stock. Cover and simmer until the chicken is tender, adding a little water if the dish becomes dry.

4. When the chicken is cooked, add the parsley, cream and green pepper and simmer for another 5 minutes.

5. Add the pasta, mix well and season with salt and pepper.

Bread and Butter Pudding

The crispy topping puts this bread and butter pudding in it’s own legendary category!

Serves: 8 - 10

Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Ingredients:

10 thick slices white bread

60ml sugar

1 litre milk

30ml butter or margarine

3 eggs
5ml vanilla essence

Crust:
115g butter or margarine
200g sugar
egg
5ml vanilla essence

Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
2. Cut the crusts off all of the slices of bread, then cut the bread into cubes. Arrange the cubes in a large baking dish.
3. Melt the butter and add the milk to the melted butter. Add the eggs and the vanilla essence and pour over the bread pieces. Leave to soak for about 15 minutes before baking for 40 minutes, or until set.
4. Make the crust: beat the butter, sugar and eggs together. As soon as the pudding is out of the oven spread the mixture over the whole pudding. Place it back into the oven and bake for another 20-25 minutes until golden brown on top.
5. Serve hot with custard or ice cream.

Tonight I will be at the 'Last Tango in Paris' with Lola Montez raising funds for the ‘Ons Huis Trust’ charity for Mr. South Africa 2010. Come along as see what tonight’s taste of tango is all about…. Think i may just stick to conventional ‘lang-arm’ however, I will tango for charity and be there to entertain the ladies. Last night proved to be yet another success for raising funds for the Mr. South Africa charity of choice, the ‘Ons Huis Trust’ that is raising money to build another protective home and activity centre for mentally handicapped adults so they can enjoy adequate physical care.

A big heartfelt thanks to Jenny of Lola Montez for providing me with this platform to reach out to these ladies at her private function. The evening was enjoyed by all the lovely ladies that attended. These women are real ‘boks for sport’ and did not hesitate to assist me in raising R1000 in aid of this needy cause. I think it is awesome that there are such generous people in this world, willing to support me, and in doing so, they are supporting mentally handicapped adults. Thank you to Sandrina Haeck (in photo below) who made a generous donation of R500.

We take our well-being for granted and forget to consider those less fortunate than ourselves. I keep reminding myself how fortunate I am to be healthy, mentally and physically. As one of my tasks for this pageant is to support charity, I only have realised in this short space of time how many charities are in need of assistance, both you and I the power to make a difference.

My message for you today and everyday is to wake up everyday with gratitude in your heart and love unconditionally!

I have been invited as a special guest to attend CHOC's (Childrens Haemotology Oncology Clinic) 30th Birthday Dinner being held at Coco Bongo at Monte Casino on Tuesday 8 September. I am honoured to be selected as one of their guests and look forward to supporting yet another charity in support of these children that suffer from this dreaded blood disease.

Keeping more than hope alive. This Childhood Cancer Foundation is a country wide voluntary organization. It brings together the parents of children who suffer from all varieties of cancer or life threatening blood disorders. They recognize the inevitable disruption to family life when a child faces vigorous and often lengthy treatment. The non-government organization is funded by donations received from corporate entities, individuals and parents of children with cancer. Funds raised benefit the children and their families directly.

Fundraising at Ramkietjie for Gareth Pickett: Perthes Syndrome

On 13 September I will be participating in a fund raising event as MC at Ramkietjie restaurant in Ruimsig for Gareth Pickett, a 19 year old student suffering from a rare disease called Perthes Syndrome. Perthes is a disease of the hip joint where ball of the hip disintegrates. The total cost of this operation and to fly Professor Mike Solomon from Australia to assist with the surgery will cost R140 000. All proceeds from this event will go towards this procedure. Gareth desperately needs to have this operation and has been scheduled for theatre on 6 October 2009. I will personally be accompanying him to hospital the media will also be covering this story. This procedure will make a huge difference in this young mans life, and he can then complete his sponsored studies in Hotel Management at University of Johannesburg. His general health will also improve if he no longer has to live on pain killers (grade 4 pain) to get by in a daily basis. He is currently using a crutch at the campus as he stands for long hours and walks long distances on campus.

Fundraising Auction for Vicky Parker with Lyme Disease

On 22 August, Chef Tinus Pretorius of Ramkietjie and I managed to raise R10 000 at Kenjaro Lodge in Muldersdrift. This was done by auctioning ourselves in aid of Vicky Parker suffering from Lymes disease. She urgently requires treatment in Germany and is fighting for her life. Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused and spread by ticks when they bite the skin, which permits the bacteria to infect the body which causes abnormalities in the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system.

This was an amazing evening and the highest bidder, Pamela Cashman will be dining 20 guests of her choice at Ramkeitjie with Tinus and I as her hosts on 12 September.
